Woman Who Discovered She Accidentally Married Her Cousin Says It's Made Them Closer

Celina Quinones is taking a surprisingly positive view of a very unexpected discovery — that she unknowingly married her cousin. Rather than letting it tear her family apart, she says the revelation has actually strengthened her bond with husband Joseph.

​The couple, who tied the knot in July 2006 after dating for years, have three children together. A decade into their marriage, Celina decided to explore her ancestry and submitted a DNA test. To her shock, the results revealed that Joseph — her husband and father of her kids — was also her cousin.

Despite the initial surprise, Celina, who lives in Colorado, took it in stride and even shared their story on TikTok. Her humorous and candid take on the situation quickly went viral, sparking a wave of reactions online.

“I thought it would be funny,” Celina told People, admitting she didn’t expect the overwhelming response. Although she briefly considered taking the video down due to the backlash, she ultimately kept it up, deciding to own her story.

She and Joseph had already explained the situation to their kids — two teenage boys and an 11-year-old girl — and were relieved by how understanding they were. “They were like, ‘It doesn’t matter, you’re still our parents. That’s our family,’” Celina shared.

Friends and co-workers also responded with support, though many were more surprised by the viral attention than the actual cousin revelation.

The viral moment, Celina says, opened a “Pandora’s box” of similar stories. She’s since received countless messages from people who’ve discovered relatives they never knew about or who found themselves in comparable situations.

As for her marriage? It’s still going strong. "We just celebrated our 18th anniversary," she said. "It’s been a blessing. I feel like we’ve grown even closer through this."
