Why Gordon Ramsay Doesn’t Dine in His Own Restaurants – In His Own Words

Despite being the mastermind behind a global empire of high-end restaurants, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay recently shared a surprising personal rule: he rarely, if ever, eats in his own establishments.

During a candid conversation on The Savoy Originals podcast with Alex Zane, the world-renowned chef opened up about why he avoids dining at his own venues. Ramsay, now 58, admitted that although his restaurants are celebrated for their exceptional cuisine and top-tier service, the refined atmosphere just isn't his style.

In fact, he's only dined at one of his own restaurants twice in the past 25 years – once to celebrate his daughter Megan’s 16th birthday, and another time while hosting Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper.

“It sounds strange, I know,” Ramsay confessed. “You build this beautiful place, and yet it feels too posh for me. I can’t sit there with that level of attention. It’s just not comfortable.”

Ramsay explained that the highly polished dining experience can feel overwhelming—even to him. For someone who thrives on creating unforgettable experiences for others, being on the receiving end is simply not where he feels at ease.

Recalling Megan’s birthday, he shared a touching moment: “She sat there at the end, crying, and said, ‘Dad, I get it now. I understand why you push us to work hard and pursue something meaningful.’”

For Ramsay, the focus has always been on the guest. “It’s a special moment for them,” he said. “I’m a giver, not a receiver. That’s why I’m uncomfortable being the one served.”

So, if you’ve ever felt a little out of place in a fine-dining setting, just remember—even Gordon Ramsay can relate.
