People Shocked as Massive ‘Dinosaur-Like’ Alligator Strolls Across Golf Course

Golfers in South Carolina were stunned this week when a massive alligator casually wandered across a course, looking more like a prehistoric creature than a modern-day reptile.

The surprising moment took place at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, where players had to pause their game as the enormous alligator slowly made its way across the fairway and into a nearby water hazard. The sight left many comparing it to a dinosaur due to its sheer size.

Although not quite on par with the size of the largest great white shark ever filmed, the gator was large enough to make even experienced golfers second-guess their swing. Thankfully, alligators are generally less aggressive than crocodiles, though still not something you'd want to encounter up close.

While alligators are rare in the UK, they’re a more familiar sight in parts of the US—occasionally even surprising swimmers. A video of the encounter was posted by popular X (formerly Twitter) user Rick Golfs, and it quickly went viral.

He captioned the footage: “Insane crocodile at the Kiawah Ocean Course! Props to the cameraman for getting close. For $600 a round, you not only shoot a 103, but you get to meet this beast!”

Rick added that his friend captured the footage as the giant reptile strolled right past the group and crossed behind them at the tee. “They say they’re not interested in eating us… but I’m not taking chances,” he joked.

Despite the steep green fee—around $600 (£450)—the golfers certainly got an unforgettable experience, as the alligator took center stage, nonchalantly strolling in the sun while they teed off.

One brave cameraman managed to film the massive creature up close as it slid off the green and into the water—much like a poorly aimed golf shot. Viewers were both amazed and alarmed by the animal’s size.
