Family's Cherry Blossom Photo Turns Into Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment

Picture
A family in Washington, D.C. ended up with an unforgettable souvenir during a planned photo session when none other than former U.S. President Barack Obama unexpectedly appeared in the background.

Parents Portia and Damien Moore had taken their young children, Preston and Belle, to the Tidal Basin for a professional photoshoot under the cherry blossoms. While the kids posed under the blooming trees, Obama casually strolled by, unintentionally photobombing their pictures.

Dressed casually in a baseball cap, white shirt, and slacks, the 63-year-old ex-president walked behind the scene accompanied by a man believed to be his security detail. Despite being the center of attention in the now-viral photo, Obama wasn’t trying to pose—he simply happened to walk by at the perfect moment.

Portia, focused on keeping her 20-month-old son from diving into the water, didn’t notice Obama passing. It was her husband Damien who first spotted the surprise guest and tried to alert her. Initially brushing off his claims, Portia only realized the moment's significance after they checked the camera.

“We looked at the photographer’s photos and were like, ‘We got it!’” she told NBC Washington.

Excited by the unexpected cameo, Portia posted the picture on Instagram, calling it “the perfect shot” and saying the photo had instantly become a family heirloom. “Such an epic core memory,” she added.

The moment became even more surreal when Obama himself shared the image on his Instagram story with a playful caption:

“Preston and Belle, I hope you enjoyed peak bloom! My bad for stepping into the shot.”

Earlier, he had posted scenic shots of the cherry blossoms from the same location, noting, “It’s fun to play tourist once in a while. The cherry blossoms were beautiful this morning!”

Portia now plans to feature the image on their family’s Christmas cards and even joked about inviting Obama to crash next year’s shoot too: “Same place, same time, same date. We’ll be here.”

The photo, taken by photographer Briana Inell, has since captured hearts online, with social media users nicknaming the former president "photObama." Briana herself shared the backstory, saying she regularly shoots at the Tidal Basin and is used to tourists wandering into the frame—but this was the first time one turned out to be a former U.S. president.

“Usually, I just Photoshop people out,” she said in an Instagram post. “But this time, we’re definitely keeping him in!”

She added, “We couldn’t believe it. I already can’t wait for next year’s cherry blossom season!”

Who knows—maybe another unexpected VIP will show up next time.
